Designing at the Loom
Workshop with Kathrin Weber

Weave with spontaneity! The colors in space-dyed warps flow and change as weaving progresses, inviting the weaver to design the cloth as it forms. Students will design and set up loom at the workshop and start the weaving process as we discuss weft choices, weaving sequence, and techniques.

Kathrin will offer ideas of how to approach the design process using warp faced weaves that showcase the dyed yarn in Rep Weave techniques or in the color and weave effect Log Cabin technique. Both patterns present creative and non-traditional possibilities using the Space-dyed warps. Students will learn how to thread from both ends of the space-dyed warp to achieve fascinating (and surprising) results.
This workshop will focus on using space-dyed warp provided by the instructor. After working with these space-dyed warps participants will have a clearer idea of how they will choose to dye their own warps on Monday as we go into the Dyeing workshop. Good for all levels of weaver.

April 30 - Monday

Space-Dyeing Warp
Workshop with Kathrin Weber

Workshop participants will approach the dyeing process with a spirit of experimentation and creative license while discovering the technical aspects that make cotton yarn vibrant and colorfast. Kathrin will demonstrate how to create a full spectrum of color using professional dyes, students will learn how to use dyes safely and discuss setting up your own dye kitchen.

Participants will focus on controlled Space-dyeing warps. The controlled space-dyed warp has an "ikat" appearance as the colors flow smoothly and intentionally to produce complex (or simple) designs. We will work from primary hues (blue, red, yellow) and learn how to mix colors to create a full palette.
